Very interesting, Louis. Linda and I enjoyed the first part immensely, but sadly had another engagement so missed the 2nd part.
Well done!
cheers

Cantonese opera

Aug 12, 2007

I’ve never been to a performance of Cantonese opera before (heck, I’ve never actually been to any opera before), so I didn’t know what to expect at Cantonese Delights last night.

It was great fun, and I enjoyed myself; speaking to a couple of audience members, they enjoyed themselves as well.

The costumes are beyond lavish; incredibly elaborate embroidery and jewelling, and the headdresses are similarly intricate.  The makeup and hair are just as elaborated.  When I was talking to one of the MCs, Daryl Chin, he said the actors started preparing – doing their hair, makeup and donning costumes – over four hours before the performance started, and needed every minute of it to get ready on time.

The Australian Darwin Cantonese Opera Association presented four extracts from class Cantonese operas, but they weren’t the only ones on stage; students at the Chinese Language and Cultural School presented a couple of items too, a northern Chinese lion dance, and another traditional dance.  Then a Korean pianist who’s settled in Darwin rounded out the performance, playing one Eastern and one Western composition.

Terrific night, but the main question I’m left with is, where do I get one of the headdresses with the 1.5 metre-long pheasant feathers?  Those feathers fascinated me all during the performance; they had a life of their own, following the performers around all over the stage.  I don’t often wear hats, but if someone gave me a hat with two 1.5 metre-long feathers on it, I’d wear it.

Saturday afternoon, and the Louvered Lounge is open

Aug 11, 2007

It’s five-ish, we’ve taken down the curtains and set up some gear, and the Louvered Lounge is once again open for business!

It’s a little quiet here, though.  Kate’s headed off to see the premiere of Rogue down at the Deckchair cinema, and then she’s off to catch another event, Duo Lontain and William Barton.  Meanwhile, Jack’s over in the Star Shell watching a soundcheck and getting some photos.

I tell you what, the music coming out of that soundcheck is extraordinary, it really is.  It’s a rehearsal and soundcheck for SingSing, which is opening tonight, and it’s gorgeous – the passion and harmony is wonderful.  If you know David Bridie and George Telek, you’ll know what I’m talking about; if you don’t, imagine Peter Gabriel’s world music stuff with a touch of Massive Attack (on their album Mezzanine, at least) thrown in the blender and you’ll be in the right general area.

Jack’s covering SingSing tonight while I go off and cover Cantonese Delights at the Entertainment Centre; d’you reckon he’ll swap if I ask him nicely?  Ah well, SingSing is due to run for a few more nights, so I’ll hear it in its entirety tomorrow night instead.  And I am looking forward to Cantonese Delights – I’ve never seen Cantonese opera before, and this is the full-on thing, with costumes and all, so it’ll be something new for me.  Which is one thing I love – any day that’s got something new in it is a good day.

Before that rolls around, though, I’m going to sit here in the Louvred Lounge a bit, do some work online, and just groove to the music.  Is there a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon?

Cantonese Delights 2008 by Kate Humphris

It’s not uncommon for a woman to spend hours preparing for a big Saturday night.

Hair, makeup, clothes – everything has to be right.

And when you’re on show in front of hundreds of people, getting it right is all that more important.

For cast members of Cantonese Delights – a series of short pieces from some of the most famous Chinese Operas – the hair and make up process can last longer than the show itself.

With over four hours allocated to prepare some of the performers for stage, there’s plenty of room for nervous butterflies to form – but performer Louis Wong says it’s just part of the excitement.

“We’ve been performing since 2002, and this is our big show of the year. Usually our audience is mainly the Chinese community in Darwin, but for the Darwin Festival show, it’s a good mix of tourists and locals – and of course members of our community.

Recognising the need to explain the story to the audience, the opera company have introduced subtitles “I think it’s an improvement on Italian Opera”, laughs stage manager Charles Yuen.

Like Italian opera – the show is big and colourful, with some hairpieces and costumes so outrageous that “a woman’s head ends up twice the size of her actual head!” says Yuen.

But Wong admits, the costumes can be a bit tricky to wear “We might take four hours to get ready, but we can make a mess getting that stuff off in ten minutes!”.

While the Darwin Festival is definitely a highlight of the year, the company have performed around the Territory.

“We were invited to perform at Parliament House, and last week even travelled down to Pine Creek to perform with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra”.

Based at Charles Darwin University, the group clearly enjoy their bigger performances, especially being given the chance to stage their shows in front of a diverse Darwin crowd.

“Usually our main audience is the local Chinese community”, say Yuen. “But at the Darwin Festival, we’re really well supported by the general Darwin audience, as well as many tourists”.

 Hi Louis and Winnie,

Thank you for a very enjoyable show. I like all the performances, but my favourite is the first one.

My camera did not work very well in the theatre, therefore here are mainly the photos I have taken in the dressing room.

 Kind regards
