A dream in the Red Mansion
“Dreams in the Red Mansion” is a classical novel written by SK Tso, a renowned Qing scholar in the 17th century. The novel vividly depicts the real life of the members of a powerful family in feudalistic China – hierarchical, rigid, corrupted and inhumane. This opera extract is a story about the honest and pure friendship between a young master, the 16 y.o. BoYuk and his servant of similar age, the loyal but hot-headed, ChingMan. In this act, ChingMan demonstrates her loyalty by sacrificing her health to repair an expensive poncho made from the combination of golden threads and peacock feathers and saves BoYuk from being punished by his father.
